AICP-OES stands for inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. Instrument techniques are either sequential or simultaneous type, by which composition of most elements of the periodic table can be determined in solution form, using plasma and a spectrometer.

ICP-OES has a variety of applications across food, pharmaceuticals, environmental and consumer products. These include determination of heavy metals for regulatory compliance which often stipulate strict test methods and techniques, quality control of raw materials and finished product specifications.

Northern Testhouse (Leicester) Ltd recently invested in a new Agilent 5850 ICP-OES simultaneous type for analysing suite of 25 elements ISO/IEC 17025: 2017 accredited covering toy and food contact safety, salt content in food and minerals in food supplements.

What are the advantages of ICP-OES?

ICP-OES simultaneous technique can rapidly determine single element or multi-elements usually within 2 minutes with low sample volume and higher calibration range. These are some major advantages compared to AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy) which can determine one element at time has restricted calibration range and require significant sample volume.
