UK/EU Ceramic ware, glassware, etc food contact materials (FCM)  BS6748

Ceramic ware, glass ceramic ware and vitreous enamel ware intended to come into contact with food are governed by commission regulations (directives) 2005/31EC and 84/500/EEC for complying with the framework regulations 1935/2004EU as amended.
Items are classified in any of 3 applicable categories. Majority of ceramic/tableware such as plates, saucers, bowls, cups, mugs, teapots etc fall with Category 1 or Category 2.

The regulations do not exclude glass bottles and jars used as food packaging materials.

In England, the regulations are adapted in Statutory Instrument 2006 No 1179 The Ceramic Articles in Contact with Food (England) Regulations.

Items can be assessed against the requirements of BS6748 for demonstrating compliance with the above regulations, specifying strict requirements for lead and cadmium release.

The Northern Testhouse (Leicester) has the expertise and offers in house UKAS accredited testing for BS6748.
