Ceramic ware

BS6748 Testing, ASTM C738 and ASTM C927

Ceramic ware items intended to come into contact with food are governed by commission regulations (directives) 2005/31EC and 84/500/EEC

In England, the regulations are adapted in Statutory Instrument 2006 No 1179 The Ceramic Articles in Contact with Food (England) Regulations .

The Northern Testhouse (Leicester) is UKAS accredited for BS6748: 1986 +A1: 20011 standard testing used as one route for demonstrating compliance with the above regulations.

This standard also applies to glassware, glass ceramic ware and vitreous enamel ware, for lead and cadmium release only assessed against below appropriate classification

Category and limits given in the standard:

Category Type Lead Cadmium
1 Flat ware 0.8mg/dm² 0.07mg/dm²
2 Holloware 4.0mg/L 0.3mg/L
3 Packaging, storage cookware 1.5mg/L 0.1mg/L

Developments

Revision of directive 84/500/EEC is being proposed, which if adopted, will reduce lead limit by 400 times and cadmium by 60 times compared to current permitted levels
The proposed revision needs clarification in respect of food stimulant type, test conditions and whether single or repeat extraction results before implementation is in place.
